Where Do We Go From Here?

Greetings

We hope you are well in these troubled times.

The purpose of this blog post is to explain the current situation with this website and invite you to join the SOICmember.com website using the free “trial membership” I have created.  This will do two things.  The first is allow you to look around the site and see areas that before you could only see as a member.  The second is that it will enable you to participate in a poll that will be posted March 23 in Surveys and Polls section of Member-only navigation link.  The poll will allow you to express your opinion concerning any interest in trying to revive the Society in some form or lacking that, set the course to formally shut down completely.

At a minimum I would hope to establish a steering committee to provide input and gauge the level of interest in one path or the other.

Restarting is not something I feel I can do on my own and needs some structure to move forward should something happen to me.  As some of you know I have had some health challenges, but things are much better now.  I have retired and now have the time and I think enough energy to work on resolving how to move forward in one direction or another.

Should we restart, the level of effort or time commitment required of volunteers may not be that large but should be dedicated.  We can make it as big or small as we have people to support.  In the past there were conventions with auctions, The Stained Finger newsletter, store and library.  We can only have the offerings that folks want to support.  Modern times and tools could greatly reshape this in the world of ZOOM and the internet.

Closing the websites and disposing of the few assets, which includes the library books and some items that were in the store, is a task to complete if we are unable to find a way to move forward.  I have the library books and store items in a storage unit.  I let them be shipped to me when the previous custodians gave up their positions and have had them in a storage unit since I relocated to a smaller new home.  I have been footing the bill to the storage unit and for the websites these past years in hopes some folks would step up.  If we do move forward in some form we will still need to decide how to deal with the websites, library, and store items.

I am eager to hear from you whether you would like to see the society reborn, have thoughts you wish to share, or would like to participate on a steering committee.  Please indicate so in the upcoming poll.  The only way to access the poll will be to logon to the website.  Based on the responses, we can determine if a ZOOM meeting or email communication is the best way to proceed.

Thank-you and stay safe out there.

Sincerely,

Fritz Wirth
